… and the answer is, because you are working the old 1997-2003 .DOC format.  Save your file as a 2007/2010 .DOCX format and all will be well.

Try to uncheck the ,,Maintain compatibility with previous versions of Word” when you ,,save as” and -> more options.

This is not the solution to this problem. I have an old Word file, saved it as docx, with compatibility checked, or wthout – the insert equation is disabled. Very, very, very annoying. I cannot edit my book.

    Then you have a different problem. Our tech’s have used this solution more than once.

    This is precisely why software developers should ALWAYs ALWAYs ALWAYs tell have the program tell the user why a function is unavailable.
