It appears that Microsoft has depricated Gadgets in favour of Tiled Apps in Windows 8, so know you have four choices:

Use the half dozen Gadgets built into Windows 7 andVista
Use the 35 or so more Windows Gadgets found on http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/personalize/gadgets?SignedIn=1
Search (Bing, Google…) for specific Gadgets and download them directly from the companies that made them
Get over it

I am not happy about this but largely have opted for choice 4.
