The question I was originally asked was, how-to-press-CTRL-ALT-DEL-on-a-surface-4-surfacebook-without-a-keyboard“How do I bring up the soft / on-screen keyboard when a Surface Book is locked, so that I can press CNTL ALT DEL?”.  This took me some time to figure out… but I got it and it is easy.

If you want to press CTRL ALT DEL on a Surface or Surface Book 4 without a keyboard, you simply:

  1. Press and HOLD the POWER BUTTON down
  2. Press the VOLUME DOWN button

This technique can be used as a substitute for CNTL ALT DEL anytime, including when the Surface is not locked to bring up Windows Security and then start a TASK MANAGER:

If you have a Microsoft Surface you will also likely be interested in how to get into the BIOS and how to RESET your Surface.

Ashley is right. It’s hold power and volume down, not UP. You’re the number one result on google, and you’re wrong. Please fix it.
