IE11 is not supported on R1.  This is quite frustrating and if Microsoft has not released IE11 for Server 2012 R1 by now (summer of 2016), they aren’t ever going to.  This is likely because Windows Server 2012 R1 has a Windows 8 core and Microsoft will be killing off Windows 8 as quickly as it can along with Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1, in favour of the new child Windows 10 which will have a 10 year life cycle.  IE11 and Edge lifecycles are available HERE.

If you are asking yourself, “Wait a minute!  Didn’t Microsoft end support for IE10 in 2016” you would be right.  BUT, they made an exception for Windows Server 2008 and Server 2012.internet-explorer-edge-road-map-windows-10-win-7-windows-8

IE11 will exist and be fully supported through at least 2020 but only on the following operating systems.

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
