A typical Windows cursor is a single pixel wide but it is possible to have a cursor that is much wider.  In my case, I found a cursor that looked like it was two characters wide:

This wide cursor does not cause any technical issues, but does make it difficult to see the next character and is just not user friendly.

Fortunately the solution is quite easy.  Correct your ACCESSIBILITY SETTINGS:

  1. Click START and type ACCESSIBILITY
  2. Click VIEW YOUR CURRENT ACCESSIBILITY SETTINGS (Control Panel)
  3. Click MAKE THE COMPUTER EASIER TO SEE
  4. In the MAKE THINGS ON THE SCREEN EASIER TO SEE section, change the SET THE THICKNESS OF THE BLINKING CURSOR to the number 1
  5. Click APPLY
  6. Have a nice day
