If your Windows 10 computer does not have the NETWORK icon in the system tray and you see nothing but a line in TURN SYSTEM ICONS ON OR OFF (see screen shots below) there are several fixes we will detail.  However, to get to the point, we have found that usually the problem is the NETWORK LIST service, see details below.

4 FIXES FOR MISSING NETWORK ICON:

  1. Right click on the START button, select DEVICE MANAGER, expand NETWORK and uninstall all of the network cards, then either SCAN FOR NEW DEVICES or just reboot and Windows will Plug and Play whatever it finds
    .
  2. Click START, type TROUBLESHOOT, click TROUBLESHOOT then find and run the NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTER
    .
  3. Right click on the START button, select WINDOWS POWER SHELL (ADMIN) or COMMAND (ADMIN), then type SFC /SCANNOW and press enter
    .
  4. Click START, type SERVICES, click SERVICES and find NETWORK LIST SERVICE, make sure it is set to MANUAL (NOT Disabled as shown below) then restart your PC

The same problem appeared out of the blue on my PC last week. When I turned the network icon on and off, it appeared momentarily (but the language icon or/and the sound icon disappeared instead) leaving just an empty space (like a missing tooth) in the taskbar notification area. The solution (for me) was to return the display –> advanced scaling setting back to 100% (had it manually at 110%) and of course enable the icons. Problem gone.
