How to Avoid WMI Provider Host CPU Hot Issue

WMI or Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Host (WmiPrvSE) is a very important windows host management process used by the developers for the purpose of monitoring windows program.

As a service provider host, applications in the PC cannot run without it. Many features in your computer become useless when this process fails. Worst, you cannot receive error notifications.

Virus Scan

When your CPU becomes hot and slow, a virus or malware might have caused it. Run your antivirus program and fix it. Should there are any unwanted programs or applications your PC has detected, completely remove them and restart your computer.

Turn your CPU into Safe Mode with Networking

Troubleshooting your CPU in Safe Mode isolates and identifies the problem, as follows:

• Press the Windows logo key and ‘R’ at the same time, then type ‘msconfig’ in the search box and press ‘Enter’.
• Go to ‘Boot’ tab, then tick the box for ‘Safe’ boot, and select ‘Network’ option. Click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ to save.
• Be sure to save your files and data, then click ‘Restart’ and enter ‘Safe’ Mode.
• When in safe mode, press the Windows logo key and ‘X’ at the same time, then select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
• Type the following command: msdt.exe -id MaintenanceDiagnostic and press Enter.
• Wen the troubleshooting window pops up, click ‘Next’ to run the troubleshooting.
• If the troubleshooter detects some problem with your system, then follow the instructions and get it repaired.
• While still in the PowerShell window, type in the following command: msdt.exe /id Performance Diagnostic and press Enter.
• When the Performance troubleshooting window pops up, just click ‘Next’ to continue with the troubleshooting.
• If you still see a notification that tells you that something needs to be changed in your system, follow what the system tells you to do.
• After the troubleshooting process, you need to boot into normal mood. Repeat the first step. Then go to Boot tab and empty the box for Safe boot. Click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ to save and exit. Restart your computer into normal mode.

WMI Provider Host Service Should be Restarted

Sometimes, the problem lies in the WMI Provider Host Service which occupies too much of your PC resources. You can restart it by doing the following:

• Press the Windows logo key and ‘R’ at the same time, then type in the search box ‘services.msc’ and press Enter.
• Press ‘W’ key to fast locate Windows Management Instrument service. Right-click it and select Restart.
• Then press Windows key and ‘X’ at the same time, select Command Prompt (Admin).
• If you are on Windows 10 Creators Update, you need to type ‘cmd.exe’ in the search bar and right-click the Command Prompt option and select ‘Run’ as administrator.
• In the Command Prompt window, type in the following command and press ‘Enter’ after each command:

net stop iphlpsvc
net stop wscsvc
net stop Winmgmt
net start Winmgmt
net start wscsvc
net start iphlpsvc

• Restart your PC after the commands.

Uninstall Components and Drivers

Another cause for the WMI Provider Host High CPU Issue is faulty components and hardware drivers. Hence, you should uninstall them from your PC by doing the following:

• Press the Windows logo key and ‘X’ at the same time, then select ‘Event Viewer’.
• Click the ‘View’ button on top, then the ‘Show Analytic and Debug Logs’.
• On the left pane, follow the path: Applications and Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows > WMI Activity > Operational log. Mark down the items listed as Error.
• Press the Windows logo key and ‘X’ on your keyboard at the same time, then select ‘Task Manager’.
• Go to ‘Services’ tab. Find the processes with matching IDs as seen in Event Viewer in ‘PID’ column. When you locate such process, you can uninstall the program or disable its service as you like.
