Because of the Browser Wars of the 2000’s, internet browsers have become a “personal statement” but in real life, all of the current browsers perform very well in most applications.

Here are some recent benchmarks (higher number is better) you might find useful.  Note they are all quite close, but Firefox is the slowest of them (not that most people would visibly notice):

BenchmarkGoogle ChromeMicrosoft EdgeMozilla Firefox
Speedometer 3.043.8340.0337.63
JetStream 2.2154.2147.6130.4
MotionMark 1.2553.4520.1480.3
  • Speedometer 3.0: Measures responsiveness of web applications. Higher scores mean faster and more responsive performance
  • JetStream 2.2: Evaluates JavaScript and WebAssembly performance. Higher scores indicate better execution speed and efficiency
  • MotionMark 1.2: Assesses graphics rendering capabilities. Higher scores reflect smoother and faster rendering

Considerations Before Rolling Out a New Browser

It certainly is possible that one browser outperforms the other on specific tasks, so it might be worth Benchmarking a few common processes your staff use to validate.

Supporting multiple browsers inside a single company:

  • introduces a larger attack surface for hackers
  • introduces complexity for both staff and tech’s
  • can become tedious for internal IT support staff as users will inevitably find problems on one browser that does not exist on another then make a notable “fuss” about it
    • To solve this, I have worked with companies that had two browsers but told staff the second one was NOT supported
      • They told staff that the second browser was deployed purely as a testing option for the browser that was supported
      • That middle-ground did seem to keep the internal IT staff and some demanding end-users happy

What Browser Do I Use?

Personally, I much prefer MS Edge because, it is Chromium based so it works well on everything and it is updated by Microsoft which reduces complexity.
