You may have heard that Google has decided to scrap its Google assistant used on so many products like the Google Nest Hub and Max, and Lenovo Smart Clocks. In case you were to wear Google Gemini is Google’s amazing artificial intelligence chat bot and while it is just as easy to use as the old Google assistant, Gemini is wildly superior.
The question is are they going to upgrade the older products to Gemini or just move forward with new products.
…Over the coming months, we’re upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini; and later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices 1 or available for new downloads on mobile app stores.
Additionally, we’ll be upgrading tablets, cars and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches, to Gemini. We’re also bringing a new experience, powered by Gemini, to home devices like speakers, displays and TVs. We look forward to sharing more details with you in the next few months. Until then, Google Assistant will continue to operate on these devices.

As noted in the press release above while Google is actively replacing Google Assistant with its AI model, Gemini, on mobile devices, the situation for Google Nest Hubs, Google Speakers, and Lenovo Smart Clocks is still evolving.
Here’s what the current information suggests:
- Planned Transition: Google has stated they are working on bringing a “new experience, powered by Gemini” to home devices, which includes smart speakers and displays like the Nest Hub.
- No Confirmed Timeline: As of early April 2025, Google has not announced a specific date or detailed plan for when Gemini will fully replace Google Assistant on existing Nest Hub devices. They have indicated more details will be shared in the coming months.
- Assistant Remains for Now: Google has explicitly stated that until the new Gemini-powered experience is rolled out, Google Assistant will continue to operate on smart home devices like the Nest Hub.
- Mobile is Priority: The transition is happening first on Android mobile devices, where Gemini is set to replace Assistant as the primary mobile assistant for most users later in 2025.
- Complexity of Smart Home: Integrating Gemini into the smart home ecosystem is more complex than on mobile, involving compatibility with numerous third-party devices and platforms (like Matter). This might contribute to a slower rollout compared to phones.
In summary, while the intention seems to be to eventually bring Gemini capabilities to devices like the Google Speaker, Nest Hub, and Other speakers, there’s no confirmation yet on when or how this upgrade will happen for existing devices. Google Assistant remains the default assistant on these displays for the time being.
