Recently, we posted an article explaining how to install a new language into Microsoft Office 2013 and several people let us know they were seeing errors like this one:
The Language Of This Installation Package Is Not Supported By Your System
De verwachte versie van het product is niet op het systeem gevonden
There are two common reasons for this error:
- different types of language settings in Windows and Microsoft Office
- “bit” mismatch between the language pack and the Office installation
- only applies to Office 2013 and older
| Setting | Purpose | When is it changed? |
| Windows Regional Settings (Locale) | Defines the language and format used by non-Unicode programs for menus, date formats, and number formats. | Installer Fix: Changed temporarily to trick a sensitive installer into running. |
| Office Language Pack | Contains the files needed to translate the Office application’s UI, Help files, and Proofing Tools. | Display Change: Installed so you can switch the language of Word or Excel after installation is complete. |
1 – Change Windows Language
This error is often due to a mismatch between the language/region encoded in the Office installer file itself and the system’s current Regional Settings (Locale), not the language pack’s destination.
- The Problem: The installer file for “Microsoft Office Standard 2016” is designed to run on a machine whose non-Unicode program language and format locale matches the installer’s expected language, which in this case appears to be a variety of English
- The Solution: In Windows, open the Regional Settings dialog (START, RUN,
intl.cpl) and change the Format and System Locale to the language you are trying to install in Office (i.e Dutch, or French Canadian or…). This action updates the core Windows language and regional environment variables that the Office installer checks - The Result: By temporarily setting the Windows regional locale to a language that the installer is expecting (i.e Dutch, or French Canadian or…), the compatibility check passes, and the installer is allowed to run
2 – Wrong “Bit-ness” in Office 2013 or Older
The most common reason for this error is that the bit-ness (32-bit vs. 64-bit) of the language pack doesn’t match the bit-ness of your Office installation. Most users have the 32-bit version of Office, even if they have a 64-bit operating system.
To check which version of Office you have installed:
- Launch any Office application (like Word or Excel), and click the File tab
- Click Account (in the left pane)
- Click the About button (e.g., “About Word”).
- At the top of the dialog box, you’ll see a version number and the bit-ness (e.g., “Microsoft Word 2013 (15.0.4420.1017) 32-bit“)
Download the Correct Language Pack
If you have the 64-bit version of Office, you need to download the 64-bit Dutch language pack. If you have the 32-bit version, but still getting the error, it’s possible that your Office 2013 installation does not have Service Pack 1 installed, as the language pack specifically requires it.
You can find both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Office 2013 Service Pack 1 language pack on the official Microsoft Download Center.
- 32-bit download: Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2013 Language Pack (KB2817427) 32-Bit Edition
- 64-bit download: Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2013 Language Pack (KB2817427) 64-Bit Edition
After downloading the correct version, try running the installer again.
