If you’ve been working happily in Google Gemini and tried to export some data to a nice, clean spreadsheet only to have it bomb out with this utterly useless message: “Something went wrong: New sheets created”, you’re not alone.

Naturally, you clicked “Learn more,” and Google threw a list of random, useless suggestions at you. We went through the same frustrating loop. The good news? The actual problem is simple, and the fix is immediate. The problem is not Google Sheets or Gemini; it’s your storage.

The Real Error Message is Hiding

When a cryptic error message like “Something went wrong” shows up, the best troubleshooting step is to go to the core product itself.

  1. Skip Gemini and go straight to Google Sheets
  2. Try to create a New Sheet manually

When we did this, the actual, clear error popped up: “Storage is full.” Ah! Now we can fix something!

The Storage Full Trap (Google Made it Difficult)

You might think clearing your Google Drive is easy—just delete a few old files. But Google, bless their hearts, makes it difficult. You can delete 100 tiny documents, and it won’t make a dent.

The problem is usually one of the following culprits:

1. The Google Photos Sync Culprit

In our case, the bulk of the 15GB of free space was being consumed by Google Photos, something we hadn’t intentionally asked to be there. If you use a phone like the Samsung S25, it’s often configured to sync all your photos and videos to Google Photos by default, eating up your Drive space.

To Fix This:

  • Go to Google Drive and click on Clean up space
  • Select the Google Photos section
  • Go through your images and videos and Move to trash all the junk you don’t want
  • (To prevent this in the future, go into your phone’s Photo settings and turn off backup)

We instantly got 6GB back just by deleting the unwanted photos.

2. Old Device Backups

The next hidden file eater is often Device Backups. You only need the most recent one! If you’ve upgraded phones, you might have two or three backups sitting in your Drive

To Fix This:

  • Go back to the Clean up space root
  • Look for Device Backup (e.g., Samsung S25)
  • Select the old one and click Delete

The Final Result

After clearing out the unnecessary photos and old backups, we had plenty of space.

We went back to Google Gemini, selected export to sheets, and BINGO! It worked instantly.

If you ever encounter a vague “Something went wrong” error, remember the golden rule: go to the core product, sign in, and see what error message it gives you there. It will usually reveal the simple solution.

The Wrap

The problem of exporting data from Google Gemini to Google Sheets and hitting the “Something went wrong: New sheets created” error is incredibly annoying because the message is completely useless and sends you on a wild goose chase.

However, the fix is thankfully easy and immediate. The core issue is actually a hidden “Storage is full” error on your Google Drive. You just need to bypass the useless error message, go straight to Google Drive/Sheets to find the real problem, and clear out space, usually by dealing with unwanted Google Photos syncs or old device backups. Once the space is clear, the Sheets export works instantly.
