Try to uncheck the ,,Maintain compatibility with previous versions of Word'' when you ,,save as'' and -> more options.
This is not the solution to this problem. I have an old Word file, saved it as docx, with compatibility checked, or wthout - the insert equation is disabled. Very, very, very annoying. I cannot edit my book.
This is precisely why software developers should ALWAYs ALWAYs ALWAYs tell have the program tell the user why a function is unavailable.
