SOLVED: What is the Maximum Size of An Outlook .PST or .OST in Outlook 2013

The maximum OST / PST file size number differs depending on the version Outlook and type of .PST .OST:

Outlook 2002 – 2GB Legacy “ANSI”
Outlook 2003 – 20GB Unicode
Outlook 2007 – 20GB Unicode
Outlook 2010 – 50GB Unicode
Outlook 2013 – Variable

In Outlook 2013 you can set the amount of time (1 year is the default) email should be stored locally in your .OST and the balance will be kept on your Exchange server.  This means you no longer need to choose between cached mode and non-cached mode… now you can use a hybrid.    This is a HUGE improvement!

To configure this setting start Outlook 2013 and:

  1. Click FILE
  2. ACCOUNT SETTINGS
  3. ACCOUNT SETTINGS (again – see the screen shot below)
  4. Double click your account
  5. Drag the MAIL TO KEEP ON-LINE slider to your desired time

Irrespective of the Outlook versions and the size of Outlook data file, the chances of PST or OST file getting corrupted is very high. Though there is an inbuilt inbox repair tool that is designed to fix corruptions of the PST file, it is a risky task to use ScanPST.exe to repair corrupted PST file as it directly works on the damaged Outlook data file. Henceforth, always make use of trusted and tried Outlook PST repair tool to safely repair damaged or corrupt PST file. The advantages of using Remo PST repair tool is it ensures safety to the damaged PST file by working on a copy and also provides a preview to its user after repairing the PST file.

The options are 3, 6, 12, 24 months, and everything.

  • I am using Outlook 2013 and my PST file size has reached around 7.4 GB in size. But still, I’m facing degraded performance in email application.
To resolve the issue, I‘m planning to use Stellar Phoenix PST file splitter.

    • I normally delete such posts because I don't like the advertising but I have purchased and used OSTtoPST and can say that it does work.

It is not as pretty as you would expect but it is functional and has saved my bacon a few times.
