SOLVED: What is Google Adsense Auto Ads & Do Old Ad Placements Need To Be Removed?

Google Adsense ‘Auto Ads’ are a new way to place adverts on your website or blog that uses artificial intelligence to figure out where to place ads on your site.  For example, it might ad links to words on your site and graphic adverts half way down a page.

WHAT IS ADSENSE AUTO ADS?

Google claims that Adsense Auto Ads will more effectively monetize your site by placing ads and links where your visitors will see them, without being annoying.  The video below provides a very good overview of Auto Ads:

DOES GOOGLE ADSENSE AUTO ADS REALLY IMPROVE PAYOUTS?

We have not seen any metrics proving Googles claim, yet, but they did have the feature in a beta for many months so they presumably know it works.  Remember, if you make less money, they make less money, so Google is not likely to widely introduce a feature that kills their Ad Sense cash cow.

SHOULD OLD ADD PLACEMENTS BE REMOVED?

You do NOT have to remove your existing ad placements to use Google Auto Ads. In fact we highly recommend against removing the current Google Adsense placements for the first few weeks.  Clearly this technology is the future of web advertising but right now it is a version 1.0 product.  There are many complaining of:

  1. making the site look ugly
  2. having too much padding around adverts
  3. and incredibly slow site performance.

As such, you are going to to want to enable Auto Ads and let it run for a few weeks with your current ad placements (skyscraper, footer…) in case you want to revert to the old manual placement method for a few more months until Google gets it right.
