Shaw has started providing WiFi service to its customers without additional charge (i.e. free) as part of their home internet packages.  Any data you consume on the WiFi is simply counted against your home data plan, which is not a problem for most people.

Apparently Shaw see’s this as competition to cellular, and they may be correct in urban centers.

Shaw Internet customers with an @shaw.ca email address can easily and securely connect to the Shaw WiFi Trial. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Access the network/WiFi settings on your WiFi enabled device.
  2. Select “ShawOpen” from the list of wireless networks or, for an even more secure connection, select “ShawSecure” and enter passphrase ‘shawwifi’.
  3. Open your web browser. You will be redirected to the Shaw WiFi Trial sign in page.
  4. Sign in using your @shaw.ca email address and password.

Currently Shaw has more than 40 hotspots but plan to have thousands in the coming months.

Visit www.shaw.ca/wifi for more details and an updated map of trial locations.

yep, Shaw are pretty good (although their support call delays are unacceptably long lately)
